Social Media

Let's talk about social media.

Good, engaged, and professional social media usage is a wonderful thing. It connects us to people and opportunities that would be more difficult to have and maintain. It allows us to advertise and share information. And social media can simply be fun.

The problems arise when people overuse...and mis-use...their platforms.

So, here is the most important rule of using social media:

#1 - When you are with other people, be WITH them. Don't over-engage with your phone. Be present in real life!

And, here are a few additional guidelines to help you use social media in a helpful way:

  • Remember, people are generally posting 'the best'. Don't compare yourself to someone else's social media life.

  • Lock down your privacy settings…this protects you and your friends.

  • Don’t use social media as a diary (in other words, we don't need to hear all your dirty secrets!).

  • Do not over-share, lie, or exaggerate.

  • Keep private conversations that you have with someone, private…

  • When posting pictures online, consider:

    • Whether or not others in the photos want the pictures posted

    • What impression others might get about the people in the picture

    • How many pictures you’ve posted recently (your Instagram account notifications shouldn't keep someone else awake all night because you post every hour!)

  • You still want to use proper grammar and spelling...it makes it easier for others to understand what you're trying to say (plus, you never know who might be watching)

  • Stay away from religion or politics and don’t engage with those who incite arguments

  • When you joke online, be clear that you are joking; online humor isn't always understood in the same way and you aren't there to clarify
